Barnet Council’s Children’s Service Gains Mobility Advantages With Nokia Intellisync Solution

The Challenge
In February 2000, Londoners were shocked by the death of a Tottenham resident, eight-year-old Victoria Climbié. Victoria’s death came at the hands of her great-aunt and her aunt’s boyfriend, who had repeatedly abused the child. Inquiry into her death became the impetus for major change in child protection procedures in the U.K.

One of the key issues highlighted by this tragedy was the lack of effective communication between the different statutory services. The solution lies in improved communication and informationsharing between social workers and their multi-agency partners.

Barnet Council’s Children’s Service has 270 social workers in the field, who are responsible for assessing the needs of parents and children, taking children into protective care where necessary, checking on foster care providers, and monitoring residential placements. In order to facilitate better information-sharing and achieve greater efficiency, the Children’s Service determined that it needed a mobile solution that would lead to smarter working practices to eliminate the need for an administrator to make manual diary entries on paper, field phone calls, and monitor incoming email communication.

The challenge the organization faced was finding a robust, easy-to-use, reliable, and protected mobile solution that would provide social workers and their managers with mobile voice and email functionality, as well as access to Microsoft Outlook for diary management.
