If your council needs some reassurance to support your move from aspiration to implementation – come and see for yourself… Supported by the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (YHRIEP), this event will mark the launch of Nomad North, a new forum aiming to promote best practice and share experiences in developing new ways of working including mobile, wireless & flexible working. BACKGROUND: The Mindset Behind Westgate Plaza One In planning the Westgate Plaza One development the council aspired to create something that would be a flagship project within the ‘Remaking Barnsley’ programme, which would support staff to work effectively and which would represent excellent value for money for the citizens of Barnsley. The building was designed to be highly flexible, supporting future change and with a sustainable approach to construction and energy consumption. Opened on 18 May 2007 by the Rt Hon David Milliband MP, Westgate Plaza One is proving 25% more energy efficient than existing older office buildings, incorporating many innovative features to make the building comfortable to work in and designed to support a flexible workforce, whether in or out of the office. A new suite of work style policies has also been implemented to help staff balance their work and home life. The Westgate Plaza One building makes full use of new and up-to-date technologies including:
Barnsley MBC Chief Executive, Phil Coppard, says:‘Westgate Plaza One is an embodiment of this council’s modernisation programme. It supports new ways of working to boost productivity and help us achieve efficiency savings. Westgate Plaza One provides a flexible, healthy and stimulating working environment.’ ‘Making the most of the building required challenge to the mindset that working for a council means sitting at a dusty desk from 9 to 5 surrounded by paper.’ Barnsley’s journey has been transformational but there are things that could have been handled differently too. This event will give a true ‘Warts and All” account of the changes made and will give the opportunity to unpack some of the hype, myths and misunderstandings around the move to modern work styles ….
