BlackBerry Solutions for Local Goverment

Local Government

Many local authorities already know how BlackBerry® smartphones can keep mobile workers connected to colleagues and operational issues using mobile email and calendar functions.

The reality is that many innovative solutions already exist that can enable local authorities to empower their workers to do more in the community, react faster to citizen needs, make more informed faster decisions, and capture more accurate data conveniently when in the field.

Right across the spectrum of local government services, workers whose daily routine takes them out of the office can now connect to council systems, record information directly into databases and systems, and generally complete more of their workload from the field, removing duplicate data entry issues, reducing travel time, and providing more time to focus on delivering better services to the community.

What’s more, the nature of BlackBerry Solutions mean that these innovative applications are quick, easy and cheap to implement, requiring little or no disruption to existing IT infrastructures, thereby also enabling councils to derive more value from their existing technology investments by taking them mobile

BlackBerry solutions are already firmly established in almost half of the UK’s Local Authorities and this is growing rapidly. These authorities are not only recognising the benefits of mobile email, calendar and contacts but many are providing mobile access to existing corporate applications for their mobile service staff.

For example, Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council is tackling domestic violence through the Safer Families Project. Family protection case workers carry BlackBerry smartphones when they interview victims of violence in their own homes, so that case records can be updated immediately. BlackBerry smartphones prove far more suitable than laptop computers for carrying at night into unsafe neighbourhoods and when building relationships in difficult interviews with victims – and perpetrators – of domestic violence as a physical barrier is not created.

IntroductionDescriptionPDFOffice
Gateshead MBC Case Study The Safer Families Project, run by Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council, provides support services to the victims of domestic violence. As such incidents can happen at any time, often outside office hours, caseworkers are on call at all times. As part of the UK’s e-gov initiative, the Council had first adopted BlackBerry Enterprise Solution to provide remote access to email for over 200 staff and councillors. The Safer Families Project quickly identified the possibilities of the BlackBerry solution to help their caseworkers in their daily operations.
