Access Point
An alternative name for a wireless hub or base station, it allows wireless access to other computers and networks. More commonly used by home users although many businesses are now installing Wi-Fi access points. A consideration of the amount of access points being installed is that the security of a Wi-Fi connection is generally switched off by default (to aid initial configuration). This is generally left open and this can easily compromise a network allowing many users to connect and gain free internet access or to the LAN and its facilities.
ACPI
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. An open standard that allows Windows to directly control the power states of connected hardware on the PC, laptop or mobile device.
ADSL
Assymetric Digital Subscriber Line. The technology behind delivering broadbank links to residential and office users via standard copper wires.
